

TBT DESK: United International University (UIU) held its 8th Convocation on Saturday at its permanent campus in United City, Madani Avenue, marking a significant milestone for more than a thousand graduates stepping into professional life.
A total of 1,736 students from various undergraduate and graduate programmes were awarded degrees at the ceremony, while four outstanding students received Gold Medals in recognition of their academic excellence.
The convocation was presided over by Prof Dr Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman, Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), on behalf of the Hon’ble President and Chancellor of UIU. Prof Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossen, Member of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, attended the event as the Special Guest. The Convocation Address was delivered by Prof Dr M Taher A Saif, Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA.
Addressing the graduates, Prof Dr Badruzzaman emphasised the need for innovation that is both advanced and sustainable. He urged students to move beyond labour-intensive approaches and embrace knowledge-intensive education, highlighting the role of young graduates in driving social change, economic development and national modernisation. He encouraged them to see themselves as responsible global citizens.
UGC Member Prof Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossen reminded the graduates that education carries a broader responsibility. “The knowledge and skills you have acquired are not solely for personal enrichment, but for the collective development of society,” he said.
In his convocation speech, Prof Dr M Taher A Saif congratulated the graduates on their achievements and encouraged them to work with sincerity and purpose, stressing the importance of contributing to human welfare through science, engineering and innovation.
Chairman of the UIU Board of Trustees, Hasan Mahmood Raja, expressed confidence that UIU graduates would bring pride to their families and communities through their professional accomplishments and ethical conduct.
Vice-Chancellor of UIU, Prof Dr Md Abul Kashem Mia, called upon the new graduates to uphold human values alongside professional success. He urged them to become good human beings and to dedicate themselves to the welfare of society and humanity at large.
The convocation ceremony was attended by vice-chancellors of different universities, members of the UIU Board of Trustees, deans, heads of departments, faculty members, administrative officials, academicians and journalists, adding to the celebratory atmosphere of the occasion.
The 8th Convocation not only marked the academic success of UIU students, but also reflected the university’s continued commitment to producing skilled, socially responsible graduates ready to meet national and global challenges.
