The Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) is organising a three-day public film screening to mark the death anniversary of popular Dhallywood actor Salman Shah.
Titled “Salman Shah Shorone”, the festival will begin today (Sunday) and continue until September 8 at the BFDC VIP Projection Hall. Films will be screened at 4pm each day, with admission free for audiences.
September 6 marks the 30th death anniversary of Salman Shah, who died on September 6, 1996. According to the organisers, three films from the late actor’s career will be screened during the event.
On the opening day, audiences will be able to watch M A Khaleq’s “Shopner Thikana”, released in 1995. The film also stars Shabnur, Sonia, Rajib, Abul Hayat and Dolly Zahur.
On Monday, the festival will screen Sohanur Rahman Sohan’s “Keyamot Theke Keyamot”, the 1993 film that marked Salman Shah and Moushumi’s debut as an on-screen pair in Dhallywood. Rajib, Abul Hayat and Ahmed Sharif also starred in the film.
The final screening, on Tuesday, will be Matin Rahman’s “Tomake Chai”, released in 1996. Shabnur starred opposite Salman Shah, with Khalil and Amal Bose appearing in other roles.
Salman Shah had a four-year career in films, during which he acted in 27 films. His performances, fashion and the mystery surrounding his death have continued to keep him in public discussion across generations.
Born on September 19, 1971, at his maternal grandparents’ home in Dariapara, Sylhet, Salman Shah studied music at Chhayanaut during his childhood and also sang.
He began his career in the entertainment industry as a model for television commercials. In 1993, he made his film debut with “Keyamot Theke Keyamot”, directed by Sohanur Rahman Sohan and starring Moushumi opposite him. The film established the Salman-Moushumi pairing and marked the arrival of a new star in Dhallywood.
Shabnur, however, was his co-star in 13 of his 27 films. Their collaborations included “Tumi Amar”, “Ontore Ontore”, “Sujon Sokhi”, “Bikkhov”, “Sneho”, “Prem Juddho”, “Konnadan”, “Denmohor”, “Shopner Thikana”, “Anjuman”, “Mohamilon”, “Asha Bhalobasha” and “Bichar Hobe”, among others.
Other notable films from Salman Shah’s filmography include “Ei Ghor Ei Songsar”, “Priyojon”, “Tomake Chai”, “Shopner Prithibi”, “Sotter Mrittu Nei”, “Jibon Songsar”, “Mayer Odhikar”, “Chawa Theke Pawa”, “Prem Piyasi”, “Shopner Nayok”, “Shudhu Tumi”, “Anondo Osru” and “Buker Bhitor Agun”.
Salman Shah was married to Samira Haque before entering the film industry. His body was recovered from his residence in Eskaton on September 6, 1996.
