Reason behind JU BCL Secretary`s resignation

Shahadat Sumon, JU correspondent: Agitating Teachers and Students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) continued their demonstration demanding removal of Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam over graft allegation.

In this regard, they are making a 60 ft long protest banner and they will submit a prove of the graft allegation of VC to the investigation cell of Prime minister, Chancellor and University Grand Commission (UGC).

Meanwhile, the general secretary of the JU branch Chhatra League, SM Abu Sufian Chanchal has been reported to have resigned.

He submitted his resignation letter to the central office cell on Tuesday. Chhatra League central office secretary Ahsan Habib confirmed the information. However, Ahsan Habib did not confirm the reason behind the resignation. The acting secretary of the Central Chhatra League, Lekhak Bhattacharya, confirmed it.

He said that the resignation would be reported later via press release. The central leaders did not want to say why they had resigned. However, it is said that the allegation of Eid Salami of Tk 25 lakhs may be behind his resignation.

JU is now at the forefront of campus discussions as to what may be the reason behind his resignation.

It is alleged that Chanchal has left the campus after getting Tk 25 lakhs from the further development project fund at the campus and started a business at Dinajpur.

As some leaders and activists were not satisfied as they haven’t given their desired share, they disclosed it to the media. Particularly the followers of General Secretary SM Abu Sufyan Chanchal are not satisfied with the share of the money.

When asked about these matters with Vice-Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam, he became very furious and claimed that they were baseless and fabricated. She also verbally abused the journalists who went to take her interview.

Source said, JU Vice Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam made a negotiation among the three faction of the BCL leaders at her residence on August 5. JU BCL President Jewel Rana, General Secretary SM Abu Sufian Chanchal with five other leaders and 2 family members of VC were present at the meeting.

Due to the dissatisfaction for the sharing, some BCL leaders leaked the incident at the media that was published in different electronic and print media.

Talking to the BCL leaders of JU unit, the president received 50 lakhs, general secretary 25 lakh and the rival group received Tk 25 lakhs among the money of Tk 1 cores.

Besides, JU BCL president Jewel Rana distributed the money to his followers and some leaders in six halls including Al Beruni Hall, Mawlana Bhasani Hall, Shaheed Rafiq Jabbar Hall, Rabindranath Tagore Hall, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and Mir Masharraf Hossain Hall.

On the other hand, General Secretary S M Abu Sufian Chanchal distributed money among the leaders of Shaheed Rafiq Jabbar Hall, Mir Mosharraf Hossain hall and AL Beruni Hall each of Tk 5,0000.

He distributed money among other leaders and activists personally. Besides, the rival BCL group distributed their junior fellows in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rhaman hall, Mowlana Bhashani Hall and Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore hall.

In the meantime, left leaning group of the university were demonstrating for reviewing the master plan under the mega project 1450 cores. The issue of sharing money added the new dimension at their movement.

The left leaning group placed three points demands including fare investigation of corruption and reviewing master plan and they sit discussion with VC. As their discussion foiled, they came to stage demonstration on the campus by different programmes demanding the resignation of VC as she did not assure them to take satisfactory initiatives in the corruption issue.

Later, the demonstrating teachers and students on the platform ‘Jahangirnagar Against Corruption’ demand their one-point demand, removal of VC. In this regard they confined VC`s residence from Monday night (November 3).

Meanwhile, VC leaning teachers and officials also took position counteracting the movement.

Then, around 100 BCL men led by its JU unit President Jewel Rana swooped on the students, teachers and journalists around noon (November 4) and dispersed them from the spot.

At least 35 people including teacher were injured, Besides, four journalists were also injured in the attack while on duty.

Therefore, the University administration has been decided to close the dormitories until a safe environment back into the campus. Students have been instructed to leave the hall by 5pm on November 5.

Meanwhile, opposing the decision, general students including injured students are protesting and decided to stay at the campus till the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam.
