DU vice-chancellor calls for collaborative effort to protect ocean

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka (DU) Prof. Md. Akhtaruzzaman emphasized the need for concerted efforts to protect marine resources, saying that sustainable planning was needed to protect and conserve these resources. He was speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a colorful rally organized by the Department of Oceanography at Curzon Hall on Wednesday on the occasion of World Oceans Day.

Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences Professor Md. Zillur Rahman, Chairman of the Department of Oceanography KM Azam Chowdhury, former Chairman Md Jobaer Alam, DU Teachers Association General Secretary Prof. Md. Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan and teachers and students also took part. The theme of this year’s World Oceans Day is ‘The ocean will be revived through collaborative action’.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Md. Akhtaruzzaman said that the role of ocean resources is important for human life and existence. Mentioning that the river has deep connection with the sea, the Vice-Chancellor further said that the water resources of the river are being polluted due to various reasons including the industries. This is having a negative effect on the sea. As a result, marine fauna and biodiversity are under threat. The Vice-Chancellor appealed to all to protect the marine resources, keep the surrounding natural environment clean and be aware of the prevention of river pollution.
