Right to justice ensured when judiciary functions independently: AG

Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal today emphasized that when the judiciary functions independently and autonomously, the people’s right to justice is fully ensured.

“In a democratic society, the judiciary operates with utmost independence and autonomy. When it functions in this manner, citizens’ access to justice is guaranteed,” he said.

The chief state law officer made the remarks while speaking to reporters after paying tributes to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia at their graves in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, this afternoon.

“Through the three elections prior to February 12, democracy in Bangladesh had been undermined. However, with this recent election, the journey of democracy has resumed. Following this restart, we believe that good governance in Bangladesh will be ensured, and when good governance is secured, the people’s fundamental right to justice will be protected,” he added.

Barrister Kazal also highlighted that in Bangladesh, the three constitutional organs—the executive, the parliament, and the judiciary—are mandated to function independently. While they work autonomously, in practice, they complement each other. When these organs operate independently, democracy is further consolidated.

The newly appointed Attorney General placed wreaths at the graves and participated in special prayers, seeking eternal peace for their departed souls.

Additional Attorney Generals, Deputy Attorney Generals, and other senior legal officials were present during the event.

Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal, a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court, was appointed the 18th Attorney General of Bangladesh on March 25, 2026.
