Possibility of flash flood in Sundarganj soon, people advised to take flood Centers

There is the most possibility of flash flood on both the sides of Teesta River which blows through Sundarganj upazila and joined the Brahmaputra River at Horipur point of the upazila.

Hafijul Haque, executive engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) here said flash flood occurred in Sikkim, a state of India, due to heavy rainfall there during last few days.

Due to flood, a flood control embankment of Sikkim has been washed away resulting the flood water of Sikkim was blowing through the Teesta River, he added.

The flood water is coming to Bangladesh territory through Gazoldoba, Teesta Bridge at Jalpaiguri of West Bengal as the Indian government has opened all gates of the bridge. In consequence, there is the most possibility of flash flood at Teesta river basin areas including chars of Sundarganj upazila of the district within 7 to 8 hours and the people of flood prone areas of the upazila might be affected seriously, he also said.

Taking this in view, the upazila administration is conducting publicity activity through loud speakers at flood prone areas of the upazila and the people were urged to take early preparedness to reduce the loss of live and properties.
 
Through the loud speakers, the people of flood prone unions like Kapasia, Horipur, Chandipur, Sreepur are requested to go flood shelter centers taking domestic animals and poultry birds and other important belongings.

Sundarganj UNO Md. Tariqul Islam said an emergency meeting to tackle the disaster has been called upon at the arrangement of upazila disaster management committee this afternoon.

After taking the decisions, arrangements to face the flood would be briefed the journalists, he added.

In reply to a query, the UNO said a number of flood shelter centers have already been opened at the sides of the river.
