TBT DESK: The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) on Tuesday approved the appointment of Ms Nuzhat Anwar as the new managing director of Dhaka Stock Exchange PLC (DSE), bringing to the country’s premier bourse a seasoned professional with more than two decades of experience in global finance and capital markets.
Nuzhat Anwar joins the DSE after a long career at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, where she held a range of senior leadership positions across Africa and South Asia. Most recently, she served as senior country officer for Bangladesh, overseeing operations in Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal, and also acted as cluster manager during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent transition period.
Her international experience includes serving as IFC’s resident representative for Liberia and Sierra Leone, as well as country officer roles in Botswana and Namibia. In southern Africa, she played a pivotal role in establishing IFC’s presence in Gaborone and advancing a sustainable investment programme, including the organisation’s first-ever investment in Botswana.
Nuzhat Anwar brings deep expertise in capital management, treasury and liquidity, transaction services, portfolio optimisation and market advocacy—skills widely seen as crucial at a time when Bangladesh’s capital market is seeking greater depth, resilience and investor confidence.
Earlier in her career, she spent 16 years in Bangladesh’s banking sector, holding senior management roles at Citibank Bangladesh and Standard Chartered Bank Bangladesh, where she worked extensively in corporate and institutional banking.
She holds a master’s degree in commerce (finance) from the University of Dhaka.
Market participants welcomed the appointment, expressing hope that her global exposure and strong grounding in both development finance and commercial banking would help strengthen governance, modernise market infrastructure and attract long-term investment to the country’s capital market.
