RAB arrests woman for spreading rumors on Facebook

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) last night arrested a woman from West Dhanmandi area of capital for spreading rumors on social networking site Facebook regarding the recent students’ movement.

“We arrested Faria Mahjabin, 28, from House-25/1, Kings’ Palace, in West Dhanmandi area under Hazaribagh Police Station for uploading instigating posts and spreading rumors regarding the recent students’ movement. We also seized her mobile phone,” senior ASP (legal and public relations) Md Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan told BSS.

RAB-2, RAB unit that picked up Faria, operation officer Robiul Islam confirmed the matter and said the woman in primary interrogation confessed making instigating posts and spreading rumors.

Law enforcing agencies are taking legal steps against people who were allegedly uploading instigating posts, pictures and spreading rumors during the recent students’ movement to divert it to make unrest in the country.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police has launched stringent legal procedure against 150 such profiles for their alleged involvement in social media, especially Facebook to create anarchy in recent student’s movement.

“We have so far filed six cases under ICT Act against over 50 profiles for their direct involvement in instigating students by spreading propagandas and rumors using facebook, twitter and online portals,” DMP’s deputy commissioner of Cyber Crime Division Md Alimuzzaman told BSS recently.
