Gazipur mayor, councilors sworn in

DHAKA  – Newly elected mayor of Gazipur Md. Jahangir Alam and councilors of the Gazipur City Corporation were sworn in at the Prime Minister Office here today.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina administered the oath of office of the mayor while Local Government Minister Engineer Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain administered the oath of the councilors.

Senior Secretary of the Local Government Division Jafar Ahmed Khan conducted the ceremony, witnessed by Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader and political leaders of suburban Gazipur.

Alam and 70 councillors were elected to their offices in June 26, 2018 mayoral polls in Gazipur. Election in six seats of councilors remained vacant on a High Court order.

The premier congratulated the newly elected representatives of Gazipur City and said her government believes in equal development of every area and “every elected representative irrespective of their party affiliation will
get opportunities to work for the people in their areas”.

“As public representatives it is your responsibility to work for the people’s welfare,” she said and advised them to work sincerely to earn the people’s confidence as their representatives.

Sheikh Hasina said development initiatives should be chalked up in a planned way to reach their benefits to their doorsteps while she simultaneously asked them to take into consideration issues of nature and ecology while implementing the development projects.

Sheikh Hasina said the Awami League government since taking office has given highest importance to public welfare and discharging its responsibilities as public servant.

She said her government was taking forward the country through resolving the problems in the national life, making it as a role model of development.
