DHAKA  – Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will be sent to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) today for checkup.

“The government is very much receptive regarding her health. I’ve learned that she will be taken to BSMMU today for checkup,” he said while talking to newsmen after distributing keys of vehicles among the lower court judges at the secretariat.

“She (Khaleda) was fasting on the day before yesterday and at around 3pm-3:30pm, she was about to fall down. Her maid, Fatema, who is with her in the jail, caught her and informed the jail doctors immediately. They checked her and found out that her sugar level had gone down, which revived after having a chocolate,” Huq added.

The law minister’s comments came a day after the BNP chief’s physicians’ claimed that she might have suffered a mild stroke in jail.

On February 8 last, the Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 sentenced Khaleda Zia to five-year imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

It also sentenced other five accused — her elder son and BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman, former lawmaker Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal, businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed, Dr Kamal Uddin Siddiqui and Khaleda’s nephew Mominur Rahman — to 10-year imprisonment each.

Replying to another question on probe against International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecutor Barrister Tureen Afroz, the law minister said they would be able to reach a decision on her within this month.
