Call to materialize roof gardening prospects
RAJSHAHI, – Expansion of roof gardening can be the effective means of ensuring food security in urban areas as it faces shortage of farming ground due to multipurpose reasons.
Besides, the prospect of promoting roof gardening is very bright amid gradual rising of the number of high-rise buildings in urban areas. Experts came up with the observation while addressing a divisional consultation styled “Food Security and Prospects of Urban Agriculture” in Rajshahi city today. Four non-government development organisations, including Actionaid Bangladesh and Paribartan, jointly hosted the consultation at the office of Rajshahi Union of Journalists (RUJ).
Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed the discussion as the chief guest while Paribartan Director Rashed Ibne Obayed was in the chair. Professor ANK Noman from the Department of Economics in Rajshahi University gave an illustration of roof gardening along with its aspects in terms of ensuring food security in urban areas.
Former Chairman of Rajshahi Education Board Professor Dipakendra Nath Das and journalists Ahmed Shafiuddin and Toibur Rahman also spoke. City Mayor Liton said there are scopes of expanding urban agriculture after the best uses of technology and urged the building owners to develop gardens on roofs to boost the household-based income. He assured all possible cooperation towards the field.
