DHAKA  – The High Court today acquitted Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury (Maya) Bir Bikram from a graft case, accepting his appeal against a lower court verdict passed in 2008.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md. Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice K. M. Hafizul Alam passed the order after hearing the matter afresh.

“The court has accepted his appeal and acquitted him from the charges,” defence lawyer Advocate Sayeed Ahmed Raza told newsmen.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on June 13, 2007, filed the case against Maya for amassing illegal wealth.

A special judge court after holding the trial, sentenced Maya to 13 years in jail on February 14, 2008. After holding hearing on an appeal, the High Court on October 27, 2010, scrapped the sentence against Maya.

But the Appellate Division holding hearing on an ACC appeal, canceled High Court order on June 14, 2015, and ordered to hear the matter afresh.
