Muktadir calls for stronger Bangladesh-China partnership in green textile sector

TBT DESK: Bangladesh has called for deeper cooperation with China in green industrialisation, technology transfer and sustainable textile manufacturing as the country seeks to modernise its export-oriented apparel sector and strengthen long-term industrial competitiveness.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 2nd Bangladesh-China Green Textile Expo 2026 in Dhaka on Thursday, Commerce, Industries, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said Chinese investment and expertise could play a major role in transforming Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry into a more sustainable and technology-driven sector.

“China’s extensive experience in industrialisation, technological advancement and poverty reduction can contribute significantly to Bangladesh’s industrial transformation,” the minister said.

He urged Chinese entrepreneurs to make meaningful investments in Bangladesh, saying stronger cooperation between the two countries could create a mutually beneficial partnership in manufacturing, green energy and industrial development.

Highlighting the close economic ties between the two nations, Muktadir noted that China remains Bangladesh’s largest trading partner. He stressed the importance of increasing Chinese foreign direct investment to help narrow the bilateral trade gap.

The minister also sought Chinese collaboration in reopening and modernising state-owned mills, revitalising the jute industry, expanding renewable energy initiatives and supporting environmentally sustainable industrialisation projects.

He said Bangladesh currently hosts the world’s highest number of green-certified garment factories, reflecting growing environmental awareness among local entrepreneurs and manufacturers.

According to the minister, efficient use of water, electricity and fuel has become essential for maintaining both environmental sustainability and global competitiveness in the textile and apparel sector.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen attended the programme as special guest.

Representatives from leading trade bodies and business organisations from both countries also joined the event, including officials from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh China Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCCI) and Bangladesh Garments Buying House Association (BGBA).

Following the inaugural session, the minister visited different stalls at the exhibition.

The three-day expo has brought together textile manufacturers, investors and technology experts from Bangladesh and China, showcasing eco-friendly production methods, recyclable textile technologies and sustainable manufacturing solutions.

The event also features seminars and panel discussions focusing on green industrial practices and technological innovation in the global textile sector.

Organisers said the exhibition will remain open daily from 10am to 7pm until May 16.
