President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today extended his heartfelt greetings and felicitations to the Hindu community in Bangladesh on the occasion of Janmashtami, to be celebrated tomorrow.

In a message issued here today, the President urged all to draw lessons from the philosophy of Sri Krishna and work together to build a non-communal and united society.

He called upon everyone, including members of the Hindu community, to come forward for the welfare of disadvantaged and distressed people.

Terming Janmashtami, which marks the birth of Sri Krishna, one of the major religious festivals of the Hindu community, he said Sri Krishna was a benevolent figure, an able politician and a social reformer who appeared on earth as a symbol of truth, justice, humanity and welfare.

The President said Sri Krishna's philosophy and teachings are deeply rooted in Hindu society and culture and have inspired generations to be humane, benevolent and compassionate towards others.

Noting that Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony, he said secularism and a sense of unity are among the strengths of the country's society and culture.

Referring to conflicts, violence and divisions in different parts of the world on religious grounds, the President called upon all to exercise patience and tolerance to overcome such crises.

President Mirza Fakhrul expressed hope that Janmashtami would be celebrated with joy and festivity with the participation of people from all communities, further strengthening religious harmony and mutual goodwill.

He wished the Janmashtami celebrations every success and hoped that people of all faiths would play a positive role in building a peaceful, humane and non-communal Bangladesh.
