Attacks, false cases, arson: Nikli’s Ujjal forced into exile amid political vendetta

Staff Correspondent: A young political activist from Nikli upazila in Kishoreganj has allegedly been forced to leave the country after years of sustained political persecution, including repeated attacks, false cases, and threats to his life.

Md Ujjal, a local leader of the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has reportedly been living abroad due to ongoing security concerns following what his family describes as more than a decade of targeted harassment.

According to information obtained, Ujjal began facing persecution in 2012 while he was still a college student, after his political affiliation became public. Since then, he has allegedly been subjected to continuous intimidation and harassment for his involvement in opposition politics.

In 2017, a case described by his associates as politically motivated was filed against him, reportedly led by a local leader affiliated with the Bangladesh Chhatra League. The situation escalated further during the politically charged periods surrounding the 2018 and 2019 elections, when Ujjal was allegedly attacked multiple times in an effort to push him out of the political arena.

The allegations of abuse intensified in February 2019, when Ujjal was reportedly lured to Dhaka and subjected to severe physical assault by individuals linked to ruling party figures.

In 2022, unidentified miscreants allegedly set fire to his family home in Nikli late at night. Although family members narrowly escaped unharmed, the incident caused significant damage to property and deepened their sense of insecurity.

Despite leaving the country, legal pressure reportedly continued. In April 2023, another case described by the family as baseless was filed against him at Kadamtali Police Station in Dhaka, further complicating his situation.

Family members say they have been living in constant fear for years, citing frequent presence of suspicious peoples around their residence. They also allege that repeated appeals to local administration and law enforcement agencies have failed to bring any effective legal remedy or protection.

Human rights activists have strongly condemned the incidents, stating that targeting individuals with violence, fabricated cases, and arson solely for their political beliefs constitutes a serious violation of democratic principles and fundamental human rights.
