Staff Correspondent: The 8th Convocation of United International University (UIU), held on 27 December 2025 at the university’s campus in United City, Madani Avenue, became a deeply personal milestone for Sumiya Akhtar Mahi, who received her Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting degree after years of struggle, patience and determination.
For Sumiya, the convocation was not just an academic ceremony. It was the fulfilment of a journey that began in Lakshmipur district, far from the capital, and passed through hardship, responsibility and resilience.
Sumiya completed her primary education at Joksin Pre-Cadet School in Lakshmipur. She then studied at Lakshmipur Government Girls’ High School for her lower secondary education. Later, she completed her secondary education from Bangakhhan High School. For higher secondary education, she studied in the Humanities group at Lakshmipur Government College.
Coming from a district town, moving into higher education was not easy. In the Summer Session of 2020, Sumiya enrolled in the BBA programme at United International University. It was a major step in her life, requiring adjustment to a new city, a new academic environment and new responsibilities.
During her university years, her family faced serious challenges. Sumiya’s father, who had been working abroad as a migrant contractor, suffered a stroke three years ago. After the illness, he returned to Bangladesh and has remained bedridden since then. His prolonged medical condition placed emotional and financial pressure on the family.
During her father’s treatment, Sumiya spent long hours at hospitals, caring for him while continuing her studies. Balancing academic pressure with family responsibility was difficult, but she did not step back. Her mother’s constant support played a vital role in helping her continue her education during this time.
After marriage, Sumiya received further support from her husband, which helped her stay focused on completing her degree. Alongside her studies, she managed household responsibilities and personal challenges with quiet strength. She is now the mother of an eight-month-old daughter, Sineen, adding another meaningful role to her life.
Sumiya completed her graduation in 2024, but the formal recognition came at the 8th Convocation of UIU in December 2025. Standing on the convocation stage, her degree represented not only academic success, but also years of sacrifice, care and persistence.
After completing her studies, Sumiya and her husband became involved in running an educational institution, where they work among a wider team to support learning and skill development. At the same time, Sumiya serves as the founder chairman of DPH Agency, reflecting her interest in education, entrepreneurship and social engagement.
Her husband is a business journalist, education entrepreneur and social worker, and together they remain involved in activities related to education and community development.
Sumiya Akhter Mahi’s story reflects the reality of many students from outside Dhaka. It is a story of steady effort rather than privilege, of family responsibility alongside ambition, and of continuing education despite personal hardship. Her journey from Lakshmipur to the UIU convocation stage stands as a reminder that success is often built slowly, with patience, support and determination.
