Overflowing Jamuna worsens flood situation in Bogura

BOGURA,  – Flood situation in Bogura district has severely worsened as the Jamuna river is following above its danger level.

An official of Bogura office of Water Development Board said, “The Jamuna river at Sariakandi point is flowing 99cm above its danger mark. Water level at Sariakandi rose by 27 cm during the past 24 hours.”

More fresh areas in the district will be inundated, if this increasing trend will continue, he added.

Due to increasing of water level at different points of Jamuna river, a total of 99 villages under three upazilas– Sariakandi, Dhunat and Sonatola — were submerged by flood water. Nearly 2,0000 people in these three upazilas were badly affected by flood.

Monsoon flood inundated low-lying areas in Bogura district leaving several thousands of people marooned. Nearly 2,000 families took shelter at makeshift shelter centres.

Standing crops on vast tract of land in Sariakandi, Dhunat and Sonatali upazilas went under water, Azahar Ali Mandal, an official of district administration, said.

A total of 23 educational institutions under Sonatali and Sariakandi upazilas were shut down due to floodwater, he added.

All necessary initiatives have already been taken to face flood in the district, Mandal added.
