15 mortar shells recovered from Satchhari forest, 1 arrested

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit recovered 15 mortar shells and 510 rounds of ammunition and 25 boosters from 6 boxes in the deep forest of Satchhari National Park at Chunarughat in Habiganj district. A young man named Apel Tripura alias Amit has been arrested in the incident.

CTTC chief Md Asaduzzaman confirmed the matter at a press briefing at Chunarughat police station on Monday afternoon. He said Apel Tripura alias Amit was arrested along with 1 foreign pistol, 4 rounds of ammunition and 1 magazine from Jatrabari in Dhaka before the operation in Satchhari. He is a resident of Panchhari in Khagrachhari.

After receiving information from him, the law enforcers along with him started the operation inside Satchhari National Park in Chunarughat from 3 am on Sunday (December 26). As of noon on Monday, 15 mortar shells, six boxes of bullets and a booster were recovered from several hills in the deep forest of Satchhari forest. The drive will continue.

A case has been registered at Chunarughat police station in this regard. Habiganj Superintendent of Police SM Murad Ali and other officials were present during the press briefing. It is to be noted that the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a six-point operation in the forest of Satchhari National Park from June 1, 2014 to November 23, 2019.

During the drive, 334 artillery shells, 296 rocket chargers, one rocket launcher, 19 machine guns, eight magazines, one Betagan, six SLRs, one auto rifle, nine machine barrel extra empty barrels, about 16,000 rounds of rubber bullets, eight belts with a capacity of 250 rounds, a radio with a high capacity, 8,360 rounds of SMG and LMG, 152 rounds of three-knot three rifle, 517 rounds of pistol, 454 rounds of machine gun 9,454 rounds of ammunition, 10 High Exclusive 40mm Anti-Tank Rockets and 13 rocket launcher shells along with several explosives were seized.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered 18 rocket launcher shells from a secret operation on March 2 this year. This is the seventh operation to recover weapons in Satchhari.
