'Lanterns' becomes HBO Max's biggest DC premiere

DC Studios’ new superhero series ‘Lanterns’ has made a strong debut, attracting 9.3 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max during its first three days of availability.

According to HBO, the series drew 6.6 million viewers in the United States alone during the opening three-day period. The figure makes ‘Lanterns’ the biggest premiere for a DC Studios series on HBO Max so far, while also placing it among the platform’s five biggest premieres overall.

The performance gives the Green Lantern series an impressive early start, although it has not yet surpassed the longer-term audience figures achieved by other DC productions.

‘The Penguin’, for example, reached 10.4 million viewers across all platforms within its first 11 days when it premiered in 2024. Meanwhile, ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ attracted 5.7 million viewers during its first three days last year.

Based on DC’s ‘Green Lantern’ comics, ‘Lanterns’ stars Aaron Pierre as new recruit John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as veteran Lantern Hal Jordan. The pair investigate a murder in the American heartland, uncovering a mystery with intergalactic implications.

The eight-episode series was created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, with James Hawes directing its first two episodes. The series is produced by HBO alongside Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios.
