Canada has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation as Senior Assistant Deputy Minister for International Trade and Chief Trade Commissioner Sara Wilshaw concluded her first official visit to Bangladesh.
During her visit, Wilshaw met Foreign Secretary Ambassador Asad Alam Siam, with discussions centred on practical ways to deepen bilateral partnerships that promote sustainable growth and innovation in both countries, said Canadian high commission here today.
Key sectors identified for enhanced collaboration included agriculture, clean technology and investment, reflecting shared priorities for expanding economic ties and diversifying trade portfolios.
Engagement with the private sector formed a core part of Wilshaw’s visit as she held discussions with the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) on strengthening cooperation in clean technology, agriculture and automotive technology.
She also called on major Canadian and Bangladeshi companies including Gildan Activewear, Canada’s largest investor in Bangladesh; CityGroup, one of the country’s biggest importers of Canadian wheat, pulses and canola; and ACI Ltd., a major buyer of Canadian wheat and fertiliser.
These engagements highlighted mutual interest in expanding trade, reinforcing supply chains and driving shared prosperity, said the high commission.
The mission said that the visit underscored Canada’s intention to work closely with Bangladesh across government and industry to unlock new opportunities that support resilient, sustainable and mutually beneficial economic growth.
Canada–Bangladesh trade reached 3.27 billion US dollars that is approximately 27,537 crore taka in 2024.
