Dhaka Nattyautshab 2026 begins in Old Dhaka

TBT REPORT

Dhaka Nattyautshab 2026, an eight-day theatre festival celebrating the capital’s 416-year heritage, began at the Zahir Raihan Cultural Centre in Sutrapur, Old Dhaka, on Sunday.

Organised by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), the festival will feature eight theatre productions, most of which draw on the heritage and culture of Old Dhaka. The event is part of the month-long “Hridoye Dhaka 416” celebrations.

DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam attended the opening ceremony as chief guest, while Hamidur Rahman, Member of Parliament for the Dhaka-7 constituency, was present as special guest. Festival organiser Khandaker Shah Alam also spoke at the programme, chaired by DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Khaybar Rahman.

Speaking at the event, Abdus Salam stressed the importance of cultural engagement in guiding younger generations and fostering social values.

“There is no alternative to cultural activities to prevent societal degradation and keep the young generation on the right path. It is possible to instil patriotism and values among people through drama, songs, literary studies and sports,” he said.

He also recalled a time when the city had numerous libraries where children became members, saying that participation in cultural activities helped nurture leadership qualities among young people.

Granthik Theatre Group opened the festival with “Girgiti”, written and directed by Matiur Rahman Rana.

Over the course of the festival, audiences will also be able to watch productions including “Antarale Ayna”, “Rangila Fanus”, “Bhelki”, “Champabati”, “Shasti” and “Shayesta Khan’r Pori”. Cultural performances will also take place at the venue every evening.

Dhaka Nattyautshab 2026 will conclude on August 23.
