Newly appointed high commissioner to the Maldives, Dr Nazmul, stresses public diplomacy to boost defense relations

TBT DESK: Diplomatic correspondence : Dr Md Nazmul Islam, the newly appointed High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives, has emphasized the importance of public diplomacy to elevate defense relations between Bangladesh and the Maldives to a unique height. He believes there is no alternative to public diplomacy for extensively showcasing the positive aspects of Bangladesh's promising military sector to the global community. This, he argues, will further deepen defense relations and enhance strategic understanding between the two nations.

The Bangladesh High Commission in the country announced yesterday that on Monday (September 8) afternoon, senior officials from the three services of a visiting defense delegation met with High Commissioner Dr Md Nazmul Islam. During the courtesy call at the High Commission's hall, the High Commissioner made these remarks. The meeting was also attended by the Mission's Counselor (Labour) Md Sohel Parvez and other officials.

During the meeting, both sides held important discussions on deepening bilateral and military relations. On the same day, the Bangladesh High Commission hosted a luncheon for high-level military officials from both countries at an upscale local restaurant. High Commissioner Dr Md Nazmul Islam and former graduates of the Staff College serving in the Maldives National Defence Force participated in the event. The discussion focused on increasing defense cooperation and enhancing communication at various levels between the defense forces of the two countries.

At the meeting, Dr Nazmul, a public diplomacy expert and High Commissioner, stated that public diplomacy is essential for promoting foreign investment, boosting export growth, and diversifying export products. This will take the existing relationship between the two countries to new heights. He believes that this visit is not just a routine training activity, but a significant milestone for increasing military cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries.

A 52-member delegation from Bangladesh's Defense Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC), Dhaka, is on a seven-day official visit to the Maldives at the invitation of the Maldives National Defence Force. The delegation is led by Colonel Md Shoriful Alam. During their visit, they will participate in high-level military cooperation and training sessions with members of the defense forces of both countries. The delegation is also scheduled to visit the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) headquarters and hold several meetings with the country's top military and civilian leaders on issues of mutual interest.
