Rape suspect Majnu put on 7-day remand

DHAKA, – A Dhaka court today put Majnu, the alleged rapist of a Dhaka University student, on a seven-day remand for interrogation.

“We sought 10-day remand but the court gave us seven-day to interrogate Majnu,” said Detective Branch Inspector Abu Siddiq who produced Majnu before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shorafuzzaman Ansari at 1.35pm.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested lone suspect Majnu in DU student rape case from Shewra area of the city’s Kurmitola on Wednesday, after two-day of the incident. Later, he was handed over to Detective Branch (DB).

RAB termed Majnu a serial rapist, drug addict and mugger who used to rape physically challenged women and beggars.

After the arrest Majnu admitted that he alone raped and tortured the second-year student of Dhaka University in the capital’s Kurmitola area on January 5.

The incident triggered protests and condemnations across the country and students of Dhaka University took to the streets, demanding the rapist’s immediate arrest and punishment.
