The super over that decided the 2019 Cricket World Cup

The 2019 Cricket World Cup final between England and New Zealand at Lord’s on 14 July became one of the most extraordinary matches in cricket history. After 50 overs each, the scores were level at 241, meaning that, for the first time in a men’s Cricket World Cup final, the title had to be decided by a Super Over. Fans of this great sport are also invited to try the cricket betting sites in Sri Lanka 1xBet in order to have fun while wagering on those decisive matches.

New Zealand had batted first and scored 241 for eight, with Henry Nicholls making 55. England’s chase appeared to be slipping away, but Ben Stokes produced an outstanding unbeaten 84. The final over was especially dramatic. With England needing nine runs from three balls, Stokes attempted a second run and Martin Guptill’s throw from the boundary deflected off his bat and raced to the boundary. Instead of England receiving two runs, they were awarded six, giving them four runs from the delivery. England eventually reached 241, tying the match.

The Super Over was almost as tense as the 100 overs that preceded it. England sent Stokes and Jos Buttler to the crease, facing New Zealand’s Trent Boult. The pair scored 15 runs, setting New Zealand the same target: 16 to win. When other Super Overs are being played, you can visit the 1xBet Sri Lanka cricket betting sites, in which you can wager on everything that happens during those thrilling moments.

One of the best international cricket matches ever

New Zealand’s Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham then faced Jofra Archer. What happened later was as follows:

  • Neesham struck a six, and New Zealand kept the chase alive.
  • With two runs needed from the final ball, Guptill hit the ball towards deep midwicket and attempted to run two.
  • England’s Jason Roy threw to Buttler, who broke the stumps with Guptill short of his ground.
  • New Zealand had also scored 15, so the Super Over itself was tied.

Under the rules then in force, a tied Super Over was decided by boundary countback rather than another Super Over. England had hit more boundaries across the match and Super Over, 26 compared with New Zealand’s 17, and were therefore declared champions.

The decision remains one of the most debated endings in World Cup history, but it captured the extraordinary closeness of the final. Neither side had been able to separate itself after 100 overs plus a Super Over. England therefore won their first men’s Cricket World Cup by the narrowest possible margin. Many people consider this match the most thrilling international cricket match ever played.
