Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman exchanged greetings with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Dr Khalilur, who is serving as the President of the 81st UN General Assembly, disclosed the interaction in a post on his official Facebook page on Wednesday.
“A personal exchange with H.E. Mr. Donald Trump, President of the United States,” he wrote while sharing a photograph of the interaction.
The brief exchange took place after President Trump delivered his address to the UN General Assembly.
According to the foreign minister's post, President Trump thanked Dr Khalilur during the interaction.
The meeting came as world leaders and heads of government gathered at the UN Headquarters in New York for the high-level General Debate of the 81st session of the General Assembly.
Dr Khalilur is presiding over the current session of the General Assembly, which is bringing together leaders and senior representatives from UN member states to discuss major global challenges and international cooperation.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been holding a series of high-level bilateral and multilateral engagements on the sidelines of the UNGA session, focusing on Bangladesh's national interests, economic cooperation, climate issues and the Rohingya crisis.
On the first full day of his UNGA engagements, the Prime Minister met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and discussed expanding trade and investment ties between Bangladesh and Türkiye. The two sides also discussed strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new areas of cooperation.
The Prime Minister also held meetings with Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Maldives Vice-President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and senior UN officials.
The Rohingya crisis remained a key priority in his diplomatic engagements. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman sought stronger international cooperation to ensure the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar and called for a sustainable solution to the prolonged crisis.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver his maiden address at the UN General Assembly's General Debate on September 24.
His upcoming engagements include meetings on climate action, global cooperation and the Rohingya crisis, alongside bilateral meetings with several world leaders and the UN Secretary-General.
The interaction between Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and President Donald Trump adds another diplomatic engagement involving Bangladesh and the United States during the ongoing high-level UNGA week in New York.
