Filmmaker Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra, starring Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran in their first big-screen collaboration, has opened to a slow response at the domestic box office. The crime thriller, which hit theatres on Friday, has collected an estimated Rs 90 lakh nett in India on its opening day so far, according to trade website Sacnilk.

Daayra is currently running across 2,238 shows in India and recorded an overall occupancy of 11.65 per cent on Friday. The film has been released in both Hindi and Malayalam, with the Hindi version contributing the bulk of its opening-day collection, while the Malayalam version has registered a negligible contribution.

The film is also competing at the box office with Kunal Kemmu’s directorial Vibe, which released on the same day. Starring Kunal alongside Preity Zinta and Sparsh Shrivastava, the action-comedy has also recorded a slow start, collecting Rs 1.50 crore nett on its opening day.

IndiaToday.in’s review of the film reads, “Daayra is a film with the right instincts and genuine conviction behind it. Meghna Gulzar is asking important questions about justice, the judiciary and what happens to women who fall between the cracks of a system that was supposed to protect them. The procedural sections work well. Kareena and Prithviraj are both good. The film’s anger at institutional failure is real.”

Written by Yash Keswani, Sima Agarwal and Meghna Gulzar, Daayra is inspired by true events. The film also stars Jitendra Joshi, Kshitee Jog, Kanwaljeet Singh, Sandeep Kulkarni and Trupti Khamkar in supporting roles.

Produced by Junglee Pictures and Dr Jayantilal Gada’s Pen Studios, Daayra is distributed by Pen Marudhar and released in cinemas on September 18.
