On September 13, 2026, in a question and answer session on India in several media outlets including Jamuna TV, his statement clarified that Bangladesh's foreign policy is not against India or any other country; rather, it is being conducted with the principle of giving utmost importance to the national interests of Bangladesh.
In the current world system, a country's foreign policy is not limited to diplomatic courtesy alone; it becomes an integrated form of economy, security, regional stability and international status. In this context, if we analyze the statement of Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir, it can be seen that he has taken a stand in favor of a self-respecting and pragmatic foreign policy for Bangladesh. There is no anti-national sentiment in his speech, but rather he reflects his strong conviction to protect the legitimate interests of Bangladesh as an independent state.
Although some critics or malicious circles are trying to interpret his speech as anti-India, the reality is different. The relations between Bangladesh and India are deeply connected in history, culture, language and geographical reality. There is no room to deny this relationship. However, at the same time, it is also true that as an independent and sovereign state, Bangladesh has its own interests, priorities and strategic position. Protecting those interests is the main duty of a responsible government. Humaiun Kobir reminded of that responsibility in the media question and answer session.

In the current reality, the demand of the people of Bangladesh is to move forward the relationship on the basis of equality and mutual respect for both countries. Humaiun Kobir has reflected that balanced perspective in his speech.
Another point is particularly noteworthy here—Bangladesh’s foreign policy should never be conducted in a “zero-sum” perspective like the Sheikh Hasina regime of the past. That is, developing relations with one country does not mean deteriorating relations with another country. Rather, building multifaceted relations while maintaining strategic balance is the key to modern foreign policy. From this perspective, prioritizing Bangladesh's own interests while maintaining relations with neighboring India and other regional and global powers is the hallmark of a mature state.
