TBT DESK

Multidimensional cultural figure Obaidullah Tarek, long active in music, literature, education, journalism, and cultural activities, has reached the milestone of one million (10 lakh) followers on social media.

Through his songs, creative activities, cultural thoughts, and various social and educational initiatives, he has built a distinct acceptance among listeners and audiences over the years. Those close to the cultural scene believe the following of one million people on social media is a notable reflection of that popularity and acceptance.

Tarek’s cultural journey began in childhood. Born into a respectable Muslim family in Madhupur village under Ataikula police station in Pabna, he became involved in music and cultural activities from an early age. Alongside Islamic music, he later established himself as a lyricist, composer, teacher, journalist, researcher and cultural organiser.

Several songs performed in his voice, including Tumi Asmane Thako Probhu—Ami Jomine, Baba Tumi Kemon Acho Chotto Matir Ghore, Mawla Tomaro Lagiye Kande Amar Pran, Bajan Amar Oushodh Shesh, De De Pal Tule De and Nirghum E Raat Jege Ache Chand, have gained popularity among listeners.

Alongside music, he has served as a judge on music-based reality shows on several satellite television channels. He has been involved in such activities since 2012. He has also worked as a lyricist, composer and singer for title songs of various television channels.

His contributions extend beyond performing to the establishment of cultural institutions. He serves as the founding director of Srijon Sahitya Sangskritik Sangsad. He is also associated with the establishment of Chandralok Media Corporation, Thanks TV News, Thanks TV, Classic World Music Academy and Ilham Islamic School.

Tarek has also achieved extensively in his academic life. After completing his honours and master’s degrees from Government Edward College, Pabna, he pursued higher education in journalism. He obtained an MPhil degree from Islamic University, Kushtia. He is currently engaged in research as a PhD researcher at the University of Rajshahi.

Speaking about the one-million-follower milestone, Tarek said, “The greatest achievement for an artist is the love of people. The love of 10 lakh people is both a source of joy and a responsibility for me. I want to use this platform not only for entertainment but also as a means of spreading healthy culture, morality, education and positive messages among people.”

He added, “This achievement is not mine alone. Those who have listened to my songs, loved my work, supported me and connected with me on social media are all partners in this milestone.”

People involved in the cultural sector said reaching one million people through social media is an important achievement for an artist in the present era. In particular, building such a following through long-term work centred on music, culture and educational content indicates the public’s interest in and acceptance of his work.

Tarek’s cultural activities have also extended beyond Bangladesh. He has participated in cultural activities at the invitation of individuals and organisations in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and India, among other countries.

Tarek sees the one-million-follower milestone as the beginning of a new chapter. He hopes to reach an even wider audience through music, culture, education and media, and to promote healthy and positive cultural practices among the younger generation.

For him, one million followers is not merely a number; it represents people’s love, trust, and a greater responsibility toward the future.
