Habibullah Fahad’s Story Collection A White Dove’s Elegy Published in English Translation

A new collection of short stories by fiction writer Habibullah Fahad, titled A White Dove’s Elegy, has been published in English. The book contains seven stories, translated from Bengali into English by Professor Idris Ali Mehedi. It has been published by Shohoj Prokash, with the cover designed by Dhrubo Esh.

The book hit the market on Tuesday, August 25. It is available at bookstores across the country, including Rokomari.com, one of Bangladesh’s largest online book platforms.

The stories in the collection were written between 2022 and 2026. They are: A White Dove’s Elegy, The Rat, How I Became a Dog, The Day Moumita Returned Home, When Words Fail, Adoption, The Corporate Circus

The stories were originally published in Bengali at different times in leading national newspapers, magazines, and online literary journals in Bangladesh.

Translator Idris Ali Mehedi said, “The time and lives that Habibullah Fahad writes about are certainly very familiar to us. Yet his narratives inspire us to look back at even the most familiar moments. In particular, the poetic beauty of his language has effortlessly established a distinctive voice in contemporary Bengali fiction.”

Among the other published works of fiction writer Habibullah Fahad are the short-story collections Khaiya Gokhrar Phona, Bajlu Jane Lasher Porichoy, Dorjar Opare Bhor, and Danamajhir Bou. His novels include Jalpaai Ronger Dinrat and Basant Rodon.

His collections of interviews include Dui Bhasha Sangramir Mukhomukhi (featuring Ahmad Rafiq and Rafiqul Islam), Alaper Subashe Sanjida Khatun, and Tin Joddhar Mukhomukhi. His biographical work includes Amader Bangabandhu, while his edited works include Swakrit Nomaner Kathamala: Gohiner Dag.

Habibullah Fahad has been involved in journalism for more than eighteen years. He currently resides in Paris, France.
