Irregularities, nepotism in relief distribution will not be tolerated: Dulu

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has said that any form of irregularities, nepotism, or political differences will not be accepted in the distribution of relief in flood-hit areas.

“Strict measures will be taken promptly if any allegations of irregularities arise in the relief distribution process,” said the minister while speaking to reporters after providing relief to flood victims in the Khankhanabad Union of Banshkhali, Chattogram today.

Earlier, the minister assessed the excavation work of the Purba Dhomra Jalkadar Khal located in Ward No. 5 of Khankhanabad Union. Dulu indicated that the government is vigilantly observing the natural disasters that have recently affected several districts, including Sylhet and Habiganj, as well as greater Chattogram.

Following the Prime Minister's directives, sufficient relief has been allocated promptly for the affected people as emergency assistance, he said, adding that there will be zero tolerance for any form of corruption or nepotism.

He reiterated that in the case of individuals affected by floods, politics should not play a role. Relief goods must be extended to all those affected in the floods, he added.

"Our objective is to ensure drainage water during the rainy season and conserve water for the dry season. We will also plant trees along the excavated canal banks. I will allocate resources from my ministry to ensure the completion of the remaining sections of the canal in the forthcoming dry season. I have instructed that the canal be enhanced aesthetically."

As per the government's strategy, one exemplary canal will be designated in each of the 50 districts across the nation, said the minister.

He expressed optimism that the Jalkadar canal in Banshkhali would be selected as one of these model canals.

Local MP Md Zahirul Islam accompanied the minister during the inspection of the canal and the distribution of relief supplies. Deputy Commissioner Zahidul Islam Miah, Anwara Circle Assistant Police Superintendent Mahmudul Hasan, Banshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ruhul Amin, former Upazila BNP convener Master Lokman, along with local public representatives and administrative officials, were also present at the event.
