Safe Eid Journey to be ensured; tight security planned for Independence Day: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said they have taken extensive measures to ensure a safe and smooth Eid journey for home-goers and maintain strict security during Independence Day celebrations.

After two separate meetings at the Home Ministry, the minister said the government is focusing on three major issues- ensuring a hassle-free Eid travel for citizens, observing Independence Day and March 25 genocide remembrance with dignity, and maintaining overall law and order across the country.

On March 26, the President and the Prime Minister will pay floral wreath at the National Martyrs' Memorial. Opposition leaders and representatives of socio-political organizations will also pay homage at the Memorial in memory of martyrs of independence.

“All relevant authorities were instructed to ensure smooth movement and strict security during the ceremony,” he also said.

To address the concern over the law and order, the minister said the government is taking a strong stance against mob violence and criminal activities.

While some isolated incidents have occurred, law enforcement agencies are working swiftly to arrest those involved, he added.

He expressed hope that with coordinated efforts from government agencies, transport authorities and industry leaders, people will be able to celebrate this year’s with relief and convenience. Independence Day will also be celebrated peacefully across the country, he hoped.

The Home Minister announced that no nationwide lighting will be held this year on Independence Day as part of an austerity measure to save fuel amid the current global situation.

Salahuddin, also a Standing Committee Member of the BNP, said special attention has been given to prevent problems that usually arise before Eid, particularly in the garment sector.

To coordinate with the garment sector, the minister said, an Additional Inspector General of Police from the Industrial Police has been appointed as a focal point, he said.

The AIG will work closely with garment sector organizations such as Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Bangladesh Textile Mills Association, and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association, along with labour representatives and transport workers.

According to the minister, the initiative aims to ensure that garment workers receive their salaries and allowances before Eid, allowing them to travel home without difficulties.

“Banking and government support will be provided if any factory faces financial problems,” he said.
