Law enforcers to remain in field for 7 days on election

Law enforcing agencies will be deployed for seven days on the occasion of upcoming parliamentary election and referendum scheduled for February 12.

The deployment will be made to ensure law and order in facilitating a free, fair, impartial, peaceful and festive election.

According to a circular, the deployment will begin on February 8, four days before the polls and will remain on the ground till February 14.

The election will involve approximately 127.5 million voters, with polling to take place at around 260,000 booths in nearly 43,000 polling stations of 300 constituencies.

Between 13 and 18 members of the law enforcing agencies will be stationed at each polling centre. In total, more than 800,000 personnel from various forces will be deputed for the task.

Of them, about 550,000 members of the Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP) will be assigned at polling stations. Some 1.50 lakh police personnel and one lakh members of the armed forces and 35,000 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel will be on duty to maintain law and order.

Additionally, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Coast Guard will assist in maintaining security.

The enforcement will be in accordance with the decisions taken in the coordination meetings of the Commission with the law enforcing agencies.

The EC held two coordination meetings with senior officials of law enforcing agencies- one before and another after the announcement of the election schedule on December 11 last.

Following the decisions of the meetings, the home ministry issued the circular detailing the comprehensive security deployment plan.
