Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah today said the Election Commission (EC) is committed to bringing the country's election system to the right direction through continuous reforms, and it’s tirelessly working to achieve its goal.

He made the remarks while inaugurating the 'Citizen Observation for Inclusive and Accountable Elections in Bangladesh: National Elections, 2026' project taken by the Alliance for Fair Elections and Democracy (AFED), a platform of 27 civil society organisations.

Sanaullah said if the EC can accomplish the minimum reform and give it at least some momentum, then its first step will be achieved.
 
“Then, the more elections will come, the more electoral process will improve,” he said, adding the commission is working to fulfil the expectations of the people.

The commissioner said it is unfortunate but true that there is huge gap between our expectation and reality.

“However, we have to in this reality, we have establish a coordination between our expectation and facts to arrange a fair election,” he said. 

“We always aim to improve the electoral process further. In this election, many new provisions have been added, legal reforms have been made, and rules have been reformed,” he said adding that the commission is working to put in place a proper electoral system through reforms. 

Sanaullah said if all the things that have been newly added to this election system for the first time are properly executed, this upcoming election will be a role model in the future.

He said the EC will have some limitations, and this is normal but it should be kept at an acceptable level. 

He urged the election observers to perform their duties objectively as they are a very important part of organising a fair and beautiful election.
 
“You are doing the job to show us what is going wrong, what is our limitation, thus giving us the opportunity to improve further by correcting mistakes,” he said.
 
He said the EC wants that there should be no compromise on very basic issues and in view of this all kinds of assistance will be provided to you by the Election Commission.

Later, Sanaullah inaugurated the 'Citizen Observation for Inclusive and Accountable Elections in Bangladesh: 2026 National Elections' project.

The Alliance for the Fair Elections and Democracy (AFED) arranged the event at the NGO Affairs Bureau conference hall in the capital with support from European Union and the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD).
