Degrees alone are not enough, competence and discipline matter: Dr Asif Nazrul

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul today said academic degrees alone are not sufficient to remain competitive in the global arena; competence, discipline, and credibility are equally essential.

He made the remarks while presiding over the 7th Convocation of the State University of Bangladesh (SUB) held at the university’s permanent campus in Purbachal New Town, Dhaka.

This year’s convocation was dedicated to the memory of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi.

Dr Asif Nazrul said although Bangladesh has achieved significant progress at the individual level over the past 54 years of independence, the country has lagged behind in building strong and sustainable institutions.

Institutions such as the police, judiciary, and civil administration were once on a progressive path, he said, but their foundations have been weakened over the last one decade and a half, making effective governance increasingly difficult.

Referring to post–Second World War Europe, he emphasised that sustainable national development depends on strong institutions.

Countries that invested in institution-building progressed, while in Bangladesh, he observed, individuals and families were often prioritised over institutions—resulting in achievements that failed to endure.

At the outset of his speech, Dr Asif Nazrul paid deep tribute to late Osman Hadi and prayed for eternal peace of his soul.

Representing the Hon’ble Chancellor and President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Dr Asif Nazrul presided over the convocation ceremony.

The Convocation Speaker was Professor Dr. SMA Faiz, Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC).

Dr Asif Nazrul said today’s graduates are talented and courageous, as learning is no longer confined to textbooks. With rapid technological advancement, the scope of education is expanding and presenting new challenges.

These challenges, he stressed, must be transformed into opportunities. Praising the role of youth in building a new Bangladesh, he urged graduates to contribute to nation-building guided by humanity and ethical values.

The welcome address was delivered by Professor Dr Md Akhter Hossain Khan, Vice-Chancellor of the State University of Bangladesh.

Other speakers included Dr AM Shamim, President of the SUB Board of Trustees; Dr Md Mahbubur Rahman, Vice-President; Professor Dr Nawzia Yasmin, Pro-Vice Chancellor; along with deans from various faculties.

At this convocation, a total of 672 graduates from 10 departments were awarded undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Additionally, three students received the Chancellor’s Gold Medal, four received the Vice-Chancellor’s Silver Medal, and 20 students were honored with the Dean’s Award.

On the occasion, members of the Syndicate and Academic Council, faculty members, and graduates entered the campus through the main gate at 11:00 am and participated in the traditional convocation procession.

The daylong ceremony concluded in the evening with a vibrant cultural programme.

The event was attended by current students, faculty members, alumni, registered graduates, members of  Syndicate and Academic Council, military and civil officials, media professionals, and other distinguished guests.
