Director Lisa Gazi’s film ‘Barir Naam Shahana’ is representing Bangladesh at the 98th Academy Awards (Oscars) this year.
This year, five films were submitted; the films are - ‘Saba’, ‘Barir Naam Shahana’, ‘Nakshi kantha Jomin’, ‘Priya Maloti’ and ‘Moyna’. Out of these, ‘Barir Naam Shahana’ has been sent to the Oscar Bangladesh Committee for the Best International Feature Film category.
Apart from this, there was also discussion about the movie ‘Saba’. Many people, including director Adnan Al Rajib, criticized it on social media for not being selected. The movie, directed by young director Maksud Hossain, stars Mehazabien Chowdhury.
However, Mehazabien Chowdhury expressed her best wishes for the movie ‘Barir Naam Shahana’. On Maasranga Television’s ‘Binodan Saradin’ show, the host asked her, “The movie ‘Saba’ is not representing Bangladesh at the Oscars, there is a lot of discussion about this issue - what is your opinion on it?” In response, Mehazabien Chowdhury said, “I actually have no comment on this. Because since it is a matter of representing Bangladesh here, let the best film represent it. The jury members (judges) think that the movie “Barir Naam Shahana” can represent Bangladesh. I am very much okay with the decision.”
Mehazabien said, “Definitely, it’s a different kind of love to do your own film. But since this is also a very important film for our country, it’s going to represent our country. I have my best wishes for the team and I really hope that this film not only gets submitted, but also gets nominated. This will be a historical moment for us, I really hope that.”
Set in the 1990s, ‘Barir Naam Shahana’ is a story about Deepa’s struggle for survival. Anan Siddique plays the role of Deepa in the film, which is based on a true story. The film is jointly produced by Komola Collective and Goopy Bagha Productions Limited.
