CHATTOGRAM : Tension continues at Chittagong University as a case has been filed against more than 1,000 people over Sunday’s clashes between students and locals following the manhandling of a female student, reports UNB.
Acting registrar Prof Dr Saiful Islam said Abdur Rahim, head of the university’s security department, filed the case with Hathazari Police Station on Tuesday against 98 identified and over 1,000 unidentified individuals. No arrests have been made yet.
Police said a general diary was also filed over the looting of arms from the university’s security office. “We are investigating the incident,” said Abu Kawsar, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station.
Meanwhile, Section 144, imposed by the local administration after the clashes, remains in place. The university authorities have formed a committee to probe the incident.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Shamim Uddin said two written complaints had been submitted by the proctorial body and the security chief.
Academic activities remain suspended, affecting around 27,550 students across 48 departments and six institutes.
All classes and exams have been halted until September 4, though the authorities said departments may arrange exams if full attendance is ensured. Students, however, vowed to boycott classes and tests until the attackers are arrested and punished.
At least 50 people, including Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Kamal Uddin and Proctor Tanvir Mohammad Hayder Arif, were injured in the clashes.
