TBT DESK: Almost one lakh taxpayers have filed their income tax returns online within just ten days of the new e-return system's launch for the 2025-26 tax year, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has revealed.
Since Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed inaugurated the service on 4 August, a total of 96,945 returns were submitted through the portal up to 13 August. The surge marks a dramatic rise from the same period last year, when only 20,523 e-returns were filed in the first ten days. This year's daily submission rate is nearly five times higher, reflecting growing public acceptance of digital tax services.
The government had earlier made e-filing mandatory for all individual taxpayers, with certain exceptions. Senior citizens aged 65 and above, persons with disabilities or special needs, Bangladeshis living abroad, and legal representatives of deceased taxpayers are exempt from the requirement. On 11 August, foreign nationals working in Bangladesh were also excluded.
Taxpayers facing registration or technical difficulties may submit paper returns until 31 October, provided they obtain approval from the relevant Additional or Joint Commissioner of Taxes.
The NBR has encouraged taxpayers to take advantage of multiple digital payment options - from bank transfers and debit or credit cards to mobile financial services such as bKash, Rocket and Nagad. The system allows users to instantly download acknowledgement slips and income tax certificates.
To further ease the process, a dedicated call centre (09643 71 71 71) has been set up for real-time assistance, while queries or complaints can be lodged via the eTax Service section of the NBR portal (www.etaxnbr.gov.bd).
The revenue authority has urged all eligible citizens to meet the deadline, ensuring full and accurate disclosure of income, expenditure, assets and liabilities.
