State structure must be reformed thru democratic process: Mirza Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized today that the state structure must undergo significant reforms through a democratic process.

Speaking at a book launch event here, Fakhrul highlighted the urgency of transforming the current state and economic structures, though he acknowledged that such reforms cannot be achieved overnight.

"It is essential to change the existing state and economic frameworks. However, this must be done through a democratic process," he stated.

Fakhrul said over the past 15 years, the dreams of the people have been stifled. The structures of the economy, democracy and politics have been completely destroyed and state assets have been plundered due to lack of accountability.

The BNP Secretary General also underscored the need for a prompt national election.

"We must return to a democratic process without delay. The BNP is advocating for an election based on logical reasons. Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman introduced significant reforms in both the economic and political spheres, but these have been methodically undone by the current regime," Fakhrul said.

Criticizing the Proportional Representation (PR) system proposed by some political parties, Fakhrul argued that it is disconnected from the aspirations of the common people.

"The people have no understanding of what the PR system entails. The people of this country seek a leader they can relate to and such a connection is impossible with the PR system," he observed.

Fakhrul also expressed concerns over the potential negative impact of new US trade tariffs on Bangladesh.

"Trump's tariffs are a serious threat to our economy and it is imperative that we have discussions with political parties to explore potential solutions," he added.
