The African Global Health, in collaboration with the Moroccan government, organizes African and South-South Health Harm Reduction Conference, in every two years. The regional initiative brings together scientists, experts, economists, politicians, and academics to find solutions developed by Southern countries for Southern problems. It consolidates alliances in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Asia, and North America, forging partnerships with the African Union, the CDC, and renowned experts.
With this conclave aimed at promoting solidarity and strengthen links between different nations in order to achieve effective South-South cooperation, Morocco has emerged as a leader in health risk reduction. Experts say Morocco has set a benchmark and exemplary model for other countries to follow, thanks to its proactive and inclusive risk reduction approach showcased at the African and South-South Harm Reduction Conference.
This biennial event has successfully mobilized over 1600 participants from around the world in its latest edition held in 2023, demonstrating Morocco's commitment to a sovereign, equitable, and inclusive health system. The second edition of the African and South-South Harm Reduction Conference witnessed an overwhelming participation of 83 countries and eminent African and international personalities, including ministers, ambassadors, experts, scientists, political leaders, national and international NGO representatives.
Additionally, Morocco has showcased its strength in health diplomacy by mobilizing international partners and creating regional bodies like the Pan-African Consortium. This initiative has provided Morocco with international legitimacy, as seen in the Marrakesh Declaration, which outlines a Pan-African charter for sovereign health.
Morocco, a country of 38 million inhabitants, has taken the African leadership in reducing health risks. The Moroccan approach emphasizes dialogue and consultation between supervisory authorities, experts, NGOs, and citizens of Southern countries, rather than imposing rigid solutions. This strategy has proven effective in crisis management, including the COVID-19 pandemic, where Morocco was recognized globally for its successful model of access to masks, local production, medicines, vaccines, optimized confinement, and support for populations.
The core vision of this initiative is to encourage African countries to tackle their own public health challenges, relying on shared knowledge, expertise, and resources. This collaboration promotes the sovereignty and self-reliance of African nations in health risk reduction.
Experts suggest that the key takeaways of this approach would also positively affect the rest of the world, including countries like Bangladesh. Morocco's achievements at the African & South-South Harm Reduction Conference highlight its role as a leader in health risk reduction, and this same approach can be followed by Bangladesh to stand as the leader in driving a sovereign risk reduction approach in the South Asian region.
