Steps taken to declare Sandwip as seaport: CA

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today said initiatives have been taken to declare Sandwip as a seaport and open Kumira-Guptachara ghat.

“Initiatives have been taken to declare Sandwip a seaport, open Kumira-Guptachara ghat, launch Dhaka-Kumira bus service, build roads in ferry ghat area and dredge waterway regularly,” he told a public gathering arranged on the occasion of the launch of ferry service on Chattogram-Sandwip route.

The Chief Adviser joined the function virtually from the State Guest House Jamuna here.

He said once these initiatives are implemented, the long-standing suffering of the Sandwip dwellers will minimise.

With the launch of the ferry service in Sandwip, everyone from children to sick and elderly people will be able to cross the sea safely and comfortably, he said.

Calling upon the Sandwip residents to work for the development of their respective areas, Prof Yunus recalled that the Sandwip people are playing an important role in strengthening the country’s economy by sending remittances from abroad.
The long-awaited ferry service on the Chattogram-Sandwip route was launched today, marking a significant milestone for the four lakh residents of Sandwip Island.

Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Shakhawat Hossain inaugurated the newly constructed ferry terminal and Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) bus station at Banshbaria in Sitakunda at 8:30am.

After the inauguration, the public gathering was held on the Sandwip upazila premises, while Chief Adviser Prof Yunus addressed the event virtually as the chief guest.

The launch of this ferry service on the Chattogram-Sandwip route has fulfilled a long-cherished dream of Sandwip residents.

The ferry will operate between Banshbaria in Chattogram's Sitakunda upazila and Guptachara in Sandwip.
