CA, UN chief to join iftar with Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar Friday

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will join an Iftar party with about one lakh Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar on Friday.

On behalf of the Chief Adviser, the Iftar party is going to be arranged at Rohingya refugee camp, CA Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder told a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy here.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on a four-day visit to Bangladesh tomorrow (Thursday).

Speaking at the press briefing about the UN chief’s visit to Rohingya camp, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said the UN chief’s visit is very important for Bangladesh.

He said Chief Adviser Prof Yunus has taken new efforts on how to bring the Rohingya issue into global map afresh and when global dignitaries meet him, he will highlight the long-pending issue.

“We firmly believe that after the visit of the UN chief, the issue will come in global discussion again and interest will grow among super powers and regional powers,” the press secretary said.

He said the interim government hopes that Antonio Guterres would deliver a message seeking early resolution to the Rohingya crisis.

Noting that resolution of the long-pending crisis is one of the top priorities of the interim government, Alam said since day one of his government, Prof Yunus has been working to resolve the crisis.

The humanitarian aid to Rohingyas has sharply declined in recent days, he said, adding that the government hopes that efforts to mobilise aid to the Rohingya people would be redoubled due to the visit of Antonio Guterres.

Mentioning that around US$ 15 million aid is required per month for the Rohingyas, the press secretary stressed the need for uninterrupted aid flow to the Rohingyas.

CA Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahammad and Assistant Press Secretary Suchismita Tithi was also present at the press briefing.
