DHAKA,  – Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today urged the party leaders and workers not to give any room to extortionists, land grabbers, criminals and communal forces in any committee of party.

“Dedicated party workers should be given space and empowered to let them survive in politics. Offenders, extortionists, grabbers and radicals should not be given any place in any committee,” he said at a press conference on contemporary issues at his official residence on parliament premises here.

Quader said party president Sheikh Hasina gave directives to quickly hold councils of those district units whose tenures have expired. Before holding district unit councils, committees of upazila, union and ward levels should be constituted through councils, he added.

The AL general secretary warned the party leader and workers that none will be allowed to form committees involving own men to create own ring.

He urged the party men to hold councils maintaining health guidelines properly. Turning to politics of BNP, he said BNP is hatching conspiracy at home and abroad to find out secret alleyways to grasp the state power in an undemocratic way while the party takes part in elections to make the polls controversial.

It is BNP’s old habit to look for undemocratic paths to go to power without elections but they are talking about reestablishing democracy, he said.

Calling upon BNP to establish democracy inside the party, Quader said democracy cannot be established by spreading misleading information and rumors and issuing only statements.

“The people still fear BNP’s misrule and that is why the party lost people’s confidence. So, establish democracy inside the party at first,” he said.

About BNP secretary general’s comment that the government wants to make its rule longer, the minister said Awami League formed government getting people’s mandate in polls and so, elections will be held in due time as per the constitution.

That is why the AL government has neither any will nor any scope to make the rule longer, he added. About attack on Magura district unit BNP office, Quader said there should be an investigation to unearth who carried out the attack. It should be looked into whether the incident is outburst of internal conflicts of the party, he added.

He said an offender’s identity is only offender but when anyone is arrested in any incident, BNP claims the government is launching repression on them.
