The Journey of Gautom Kumar Das: From Champion Player to Master Coach

Gautom Kumar Das stands as one of Bangladesh’s most distinguished table tennis coaches, having nurtured and led athletes at both national and international levels. His career spans decades, marked by numerous successes in coaching, mentoring, and fostering the sport’s growth in the country. Currently serving as the Head Coach of Table Tennis for the Bangladesh Paralympic Committee and Special Olympics Bangladesh, Das has played an instrumental role in training athletes with disabilities and bringing them to the global stage. He also leads the Green Table Tennis Academy and works as the Deputy Director of Physical Education at Jagannath University, where he continues to inspire the next generation of athletes.

His leadership has propelled Bangladeshi athletes to shine in global tournaments. Over the years, he has served as the Head Coach for Bangladesh in major international competitions, including the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 2011 (Greece), 2015 (USA), and 2019 (UAE), the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games in 2013 (Australia), the Trisome Games in 2016 (Italy), and the Para US Open Table Tennis Competition in 2024 (USA). In addition to coaching national teams, Das has also trained athletes at BKSP (Bangladesh KriraShikkhaProtishtan) and has been an influential leader in the Bangladesh Table Tennis Players Association.

Gautom Kumar Das's contributions to table tennis have earned him widespread recognition. In 2002, he received the prestigious Blue Degree Award from Dhaka University for his outstanding contributions to the sport. His leadership extends beyond coaching, as he has served as the Joint Secretary of the Bangladesh Table Tennis Players Association (2021-22) and Secretary General of Dhaka Cycling Sporting Club (2022-24). In addition to coaching and leadership, he has played a vital role in officiating tournaments. He has been appointed as the Chief Judge (Umpire) in several prestigious events, including the GTT 4th Dhaka Metropolitan Inter School & College Table Tennis Competition (2024), Bongobandhu Inter University Sports Championship Table Tennis Competition, and Bongobandhu Para Table Tennis Tournament (2022).

Before transitioning into coaching, Gautom Kumar Das was a celebrated table tennis player, winning multiple national and international titles. He was crowned Bangladesh National Champion in Men’s Singles in 2008 and Men’s Doubles in 2016. Additionally, he won Gold in the Team Event at the 8th Bangladesh Games in 2013 and multiple domestic championships, including the AB Bank Metropolis Table Tennis League in 2002. His international accolades include winning a Bronze Medal in the Men’s Team Event at the South Asian Games (2010) and finishing as the Runner-up in the Singles Elite Group at the Northshore Table Tennis Club League (2024, USA).

With an illustrious career as both a player and a coach, Das remains a guiding force in Bangladesh’s table tennis scene. His dedication to developing athletes, promoting inclusivity in sports, and representing Bangladesh on the global stage cements his legacy as a pioneer in the game.
