Bangladesh-Sri Lanka Cross-Cultural Event Highlights Youth Leadership and Sustainable Development

The Miridiya Organization successfully hosted a dynamic two-day Bangladesh-Sri Lanka Cross-Cultural Exchange Event in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, from December 11-12, 2024. The event brought together an inspiring group of youth leaders from both countries, including three distinguished youth representatives from Bangladesh—Alfi Shahrin, Azizul Islam Tuhin, and Rahnuma Afrin, who are all students and alumni of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB). Alongside over 30 youth leaders from Sri Lanka, the program focused on fostering leadership development, cross-cultural dialogue, sustainability, and youth empowerment. Through a series of workshops, discussions, and interactive sessions, participants worked collaboratively to address shared social challenges and strengthen their commitment to creating positive change in their communities.

One of the highlights of the event was a Cultural Night, where participants showcased their traditional music, dance, and storytelling, fostering mutual respect and cultural appreciation. The evening also included a certificate-giving ceremony, where W.J.C Manoj Silva, the Managing Director of the Miridiya Organization, presented certificates to the Bangladeshi youth leaders in recognition of their contributions.

The Miridiya Organization, established in 2002, is dedicated to social development in the Polonnaruwa district, focusing on improving the social, economic, and educational well-being of adults, youth, and children in remote villages. It directly serves fifteen villages and indirectly impacts others. The organization offers various programs, including adult empowerment through savings, small businesses, credit assistance, and community development. Youth programs focus on leadership, environmental conservation, self-employment training, and education. The organization also supports children with educational assistance, books, and meals. Miridiya’s goal is to build a self-reliant, virtuous society, and it expresses gratitude to all those who support its mission.

The cross-cultural exchange event proved to be a powerful platform for strengthening the ties between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. By collaborating on leadership and sustainability, both countries' youth leaders gained new perspectives and built lasting connections. They also shared their experiences and committed to applying the values learned during the event to improve their own communities and contribute to sustainable development in their respective countries.

W.J.C Manoj Silva, Managing Director of the Miridiya Organization, expressed his pride in the youth leaders who participated in the event. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and cross-cultural exchange in shaping a sustainable future. He said, "You are the future leaders who can drive positive change in your communities. Continue to empower one another, learn from different cultures, and work together to tackle the challenges ahead," He also assured that more events like this would be organized to continue fostering youth development and international cooperation

Alfi Shahrin, Bangladeshi youth leader and former student of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), currently working as a Media and Communication Officer at Nari Maitree, shared her experience at the event: “This exchange program has truly broadened my horizon. Connecting with fellow youth leaders from Sri Lanka, learning about their challenges, and sharing our experiences has strengthened my commitment to community development and sustainability. I am inspired to bring these learnings back to Bangladesh and contribute to building a more sustainable and interconnected future for all. A special thanks to Manoj Silva for his support and guidance throughout this experience, especially during our visit to their fieldwork.”

Azizul Islam Tuhin, Senior Research and Communication Officer, also youth representatives from ULAB said, "This event was an incredible learning experience. The exchange of ideas expanded my understanding of global issues. I’m grateful to Manoj Silva for guiding us through their fieldwork, which gave us practical insights into their impactful work."

Rahnuma Afrin, Youth leader and Student from ULAB shared, "The exchange was enriching, and I gained valuable insights on leadership and sustainability. Thanks to Manoj Silva, we had the opportunity to visit their fieldwork, which deepened our understanding and will inspire us to advocate for youth empowerment."

The Miridiya Organization extends its heartfelt gratitude to all participants and supporters who made this event a resounding success. Their dedication and enthusiasm have not only strengthened the bond between the youth of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka but also paved the way for future collaborations. This partnership will empower the next generation of leaders and drive positive change, promoting a sustainable and interconnected world. Special thanks to W.A. Kamani Dilrukshi (Admin), D.M.N Sansala Sewwandi (Program Officer), and A.H. S. Mohomed (Project Officer) for their invaluable role in organizing the event.
