Sound pollution control rules to be finalized this month: Rizwana

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today said the Sound Pollution Control Rules will be finalized this month.

"The rules will give police the power to control sound pollution," she said, adding that it is not enough just to sentence jail or impose fines, but awareness must be created and responsible behavior should be brought among the country's people to this end".

Rizwana made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an awareness programme on sound pollution control in front of Gulshan Society Jame Mosque here.

She said noise pollution has adverse impacts on physical and mental health of people and that is why everyone's cooperation is needed to check sound pollution.

 The environment adviser said, "Car horns should only be used when the car is in motion reducing the speed of vehicles will also help cut the risk of accidents."

Special initiatives will be taken to control noise pollution in 10 areas of Dhaka, she said, adding, "All people should be aware of sound pollution for making Dhaka city livable."  

RAJUK Chairman Major General (retd) Md. Siddiqur Rahman Sarker, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Md. Mahmudul Hasan, Sound Pollution Control Project Director Syeda Masuma Khanam, Gulshan Society President Omar Sadat, its Vice President Syed Almas Kabir and Secretary General Syed Ahsan Habib among others, were present.

Later, Adviser Rizwana visited Gulshan Lake and suggested setting up a sewage treatment plant there.
