Sakhawat for ensuring better working environment in shipbuilding industry

Shipping, labour and employment adviser Brig Gen (retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain today laid emphasis on ensuring better working environment for the workers engaged in the country’s shipbuilding industry as he visited Karnaphuli Shipyard in Narayanganj port.

He also stressed the necessity of maintaining international standards in the shipyards, directing the authorities concerned to stop engaging child labor in the shipbuilding industry, said a ministry press release.

The advisor asked the shipbuilding company owners to ensure accommodation facility for their workers, saying they should also consider the health risks and safety of the workers first.

He said the workers have to be given the timely payment of wages and allowances alongside special allowances for overtime.

The adviser also advocated for ensuring social security of the workers in shipbuilding industry and the country's economic growth will be expedited if the welfare of the workers is ensured.

He expressed his optimism that the country's shipping industry will move forward with the combined efforts of all.

During the visit, the adviser exchanged views with the workers in the shipyard and inquired about their wellbeing.

The adviser directed the authorities concerned to speed up the construction of four coastal passenger vessels and three passenger cruise vessels of BIWTCA and dredgers of BIWTA as those are being under construction at Karnaphuli Shipyard.
