The World Bank agrees with the government's policy on overcoming Bangladesh's current economic situation, establishing economic stability and implementing medium and long-term development plans, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Finance Minister made these remarks to reporters after a meeting with the Managing Director (MD) of the World Bank held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok, Thailand on Tuesday, October 13. He said that the World Bank fully agrees with Bangladesh's economic programs and policies. Discussions with the organization on this issue will continue and they are ready to provide necessary assistance to Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that when the current government took office, the country's economy was in crisis. The government has to bear the burden of various responsibilities from the previous period. Along with this, there is also the economic disaster caused by the ongoing wars around the world. The World Bank is aware of these issues. The organization agrees with the policies adopted by the government to overcome the economic situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said, \"The World Bank is very keen to stand by Bangladesh. The World Bank fully agrees with the policies we have adopted, the economic programs and the course we have set for the future after restoring economic stability. We will work together on this matter.\" Stating that cooperation with the World Bank will continue, the Finance Minister said that necessary issues will be resolved through discussions. The World Bank is ready to provide full support to Bangladesh. He said, \"I want to make one thing clear here, no decision is being made here. I am seeing many wrong reports here and there. This is a discussion. There will be a follow-up based on this discussion. This is a process, which will take place in the next few months.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Finance Minister also said that it would not be right to consider the current discussions as a final decision. Rather, the foundation for the work and decisions that the two sides will take in the future is being laid through these discussions. The discussions will also continue in Dhaka and the entire process will take a few months to complete. However, expressing satisfaction with the progress of the talks, he said that Bangladesh has reached a good position in terms of laying the foundation for determining future activities. There is an understanding with the World Bank on the government's economic policies, programs, and medium-term and long-term plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Finance Minister said that the World Bank's position is consistent with the BNP government's election manifesto and the government's economic plan. Discussions are underway between the two sides on how to address economic challenges and implement the set goals. He said that the Bangladesh government has also submitted a written proposal on the partnership framework with the World Bank. Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said, \"We have submitted in writing what the partnership framework will be with the World Bank. Discussions are underway on this framework from Bangladesh. This process will continue through discussions.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Finance Minister said that in addition to the World Bank's various recommendations and suggestions, Bangladesh has also given its own recommendations. Discussions are underway based on these proposals. Hopes to achieve inflation-GDP budget target.
Responding to journalists' questions about the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) forecasts for inflation and GDP and the government's economic targets, the Finance Minister said, \"The government does not want to dispute the forecasts of any other organization. The organizations have made forecasts based on their own calculations and analysis. The situation can be assessed over time by looking at various economic indicators.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said, \"We don't want to dispute anyone's projection. They gave it as their own. We are doing our job, they are doing theirs. The cooperation that is needed between us, that cooperation will continue, that is the main thing.\" Expressing optimism about achieving the inflation target set in the government's budget, the Finance Minister said, \"The government hopes to be able to meet the projections given in the budget.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the IMF side event discussed the prospects and policy challenges of the global economy. In this event, the side event of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meeting discussed the future prospects of the global economy, economic policies and the global economic situation. Four researchers, including Silvina Tenreiro, Director of the IMF's Research Department, were present. One of the topics of discussion was the IMF's World Economic Outlook (WEO) The report's forecasts are updated at other times of the year as necessary. The WEO analyzes global economic growth, inflation, international trade, and the impact of economic policies in different countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report also plays an important role in monitoring the economic situation and policy changes of IMF member countries and assessing the dynamics of the overall global economic system. In addition to assessing the current situation of the world economy, the WEO is used as an important source of information to understand the prospects for economic growth in the coming days, existing risks and policy challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governments, central banks, economists, researchers, and policymakers gain insight into the potential trajectory of the global economy through the analysis and forecasts in this report. Earlier on Tuesday morning, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) lowered Bangladesh's economic growth forecast in a report during the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organization's latest World Economic Outlook report says that Bangladesh's gross domestic product (GDP) growth may fall to 3.2 percent in the fiscal year 2026-27. In the forecast published last April, the organization had shown the possibility of growth at 4.3 percent. At the same time, average inflation in the country may reach 10.9 percent. As a result, there is a risk that the cost of living of the common people, who are already under the pressure of high inflation, will increase further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the World Bank has forecast Bangladesh's growth at 3.4 percent. On the other hand, the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) forecast also indicates concerns about economic growth. In this situation, Bangladesh Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury held a meeting with development partners in Bangkok today. He sought cooperation in Bangladesh's development activities in discussions with representatives of the IMF and the World Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The global economic picture is not entirely comforting. According to the IMF's forecast, global growth could be 3.1 percent in 2026 and 3.4 percent in 2027. Rising fuel and food prices due to the conflict in the Middle East are putting pressure on economic activity. However, investment in the artificial intelligence sector is helping growth somewhat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
