For years, ‘Halo’ seemed to be struggling to recapture the magic that made it one of gaming’s defining franchises. After a remarkable run under Bungie, the series entered a difficult period following the studio’s departure, with 343 Industries facing growing criticism over several of its major releases.

The decline was gradual. ‘Halo 4’ was praised for its emotional story, particularly its relationship between Master Chief and Cortana, but its multiplayer drew criticism for moving away from the series’ traditional identity. ‘Halo: The Master Chief Collection’ then launched in 2014 in a notoriously troubled state, with widespread technical and multiplayer problems further damaging player confidence.

But Halo is now attempting to return to the foundations that made it special.

‘Halo: Campaign Evolved’, released on 28 July 2026, is a ground-up remake of ‘Halo: Combat Evolved’, the game that established the franchise in 2001. Rather than simply updating its visuals, Halo Studios has rebuilt the campaign using Unreal Engine 5, while adding new missions, expanded gameplay and additional weapons and vehicles.

The remake also represents a major change in how Microsoft is approaching the franchise. For the first time, a mainline ‘Halo’ experience launched simultaneously on Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5, opening the series to an audience that previously could not play its flagship adventures.

That wider release is paired with four-player online co-op, cross-play and cross-progression, while three new missions featuring Master Chief and Sgt Johnson expand the original story.

After years of trying to move forward, Halo’s comeback is instead looking backwards. By rebuilding the game that started everything while opening it to a much larger audience, ‘Campaign Evolved’ represents a return to the franchise’s roots while giving Halo a new way forward.
