Bangladesh has spent years asking one big question: can we generate enough electricity? That question mattered. No modern economy can grow in darkness. But the next infrastructure crisis will not be measured only by how many megawatts sit on paper. It will be measured by whether electricity arrives when needed, at the right voltage, with the right stability, and with enough resilience to support factories, hospitals, water systems, ports, digital services, and future data centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, Bangladesh\u2019s next power challenge is not simply generation. It is reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This distinction may sound technical, but it is deeply practical. A factory does not only need electricity; it needs predictable electricity. A hospital does not only need grid connection; it needs continuity. A water treatment plant does not only need power supply; it needs stable power for pumps, controls, sensors, and emergency systems. A data center does not only need megawatts; it needs power quality, redundancy, cooling support, fast fault detection, and disciplined maintenance. An economy that wants to move from low-cost manufacturing to higher-value industry cannot treat electricity as a commodity that merely exists. It must treat reliable electricity as national infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangladesh has made undeniable progress in expanding electricity access and generation capacity. That achievement should not be dismissed. But the development conversation now needs to mature. The more relevant question is no longer only \u201chow much can we produce?\u201d It is \u201chow much usable, stable, affordable, and uninterrupted electricity can the economy depend on?\u201d Bangladesh should verify and publish updated data comparing installed generation capacity, actual peak demand, reserve margin, transmission capacity, and distribution-level reliability performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A power system is only as strong as its weakest link. If generation expands but transmission remains constrained, electricity cannot move efficiently. If transmission improves but distribution transformers are overloaded, customers still face interruptions. If distribution lines exist but maintenance is reactive, faults multiply. If meters, substations, and feeders are not digitally monitored, utilities discover problems too late. If skilled technicians are not trained in reliability-based maintenance, expensive infrastructure quietly deteriorates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why reliability must become the next phase of Bangladesh\u2019s infrastructure strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reliability is often misunderstood as \u201cno load-shedding.\u201d Load-shedding is part of the story, but not the whole story. Reliability also includes voltage stability, frequency control, fast restoration after faults, reduction of technical losses, proper maintenance of transformers and switchgear, accurate metering, protection coordination, spare-parts readiness, and strong operating procedures. For a household, poor reliability may mean flickering lights or damaged appliances. For an industry, it may mean production delays, defective products, higher generator fuel costs, and lost export competitiveness. For a hospital or water utility, it can become a public safety issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From my experience in power generation, water infrastructure, industrial automation, reliability engineering, and data center operations, one lesson is clear: infrastructure failure rarely begins as a dramatic collapse. It usually begins as small signals that were not measured, not analyzed, or not acted upon. A transformer running too hot, a pump vibrating abnormally, a feeder tripping repeatedly, a control signal behaving inconsistently, a maintenance backlog growing quietly\u2014these are not minor technical details. They are early warnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangladesh must build a power sector that sees these warnings before they become crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first reform should be measurement. What gets measured seriously gets managed seriously. Bangladesh should require utilities to publish reliability indicators such as SAIDI, SAIFI, and CAIDI in simple public language. These are standard measures used internationally to track how long customers lose power, how often they lose power, and how quickly service is restored. The public does not need to memorize the acronyms. But policymakers, regulators, investors, and engineers need transparent reliability data by utility, region, and customer class. Without this, the country debates electricity through anecdotes instead of evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, Bangladesh should prioritize distribution modernization as much as generation expansion. New power plants may be politically visible, but distribution upgrades often deliver more immediate benefits to consumers and businesses. Smart meters, automated feeder monitoring, stronger transformers, underground cabling in critical zones, modern protection systems, and digital outage management can reduce losses and improve service quality. Bangladesh should verify current transmission and distribution losses, regional outage frequency, and investment gaps in distribution networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, the country should bring predictive maintenance into critical infrastructure. Too much maintenance is still calendar-based or failure-based: inspect after a fixed period, repair after something breaks. Modern infrastructure needs condition-based maintenance. Sensors, SCADA systems, thermal imaging, vibration data, breaker operation counts, oil testing, and digital maintenance records can help detect risk before equipment fails. This is not futuristic technology. It is practical engineering discipline already used in power plants, water systems, industrial facilities, and data centers around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourth, Bangladesh should develop digital twins for critical infrastructure. A digital twin is a virtual model of a physical system that helps operators understand asset condition, simulate failures, and plan maintenance. For Bangladesh, this could be useful across power substations, water treatment plants, wastewater pumping stations, economic zones, ports, hospitals, and future data center clusters. The purpose is not to create expensive software for show. The purpose is to connect real operating data with engineering judgment so that failure risk becomes visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifth, reliability must be connected to industrial policy. Bangladesh wants foreign investment, stronger export sectors, digital services, and technology-driven employment. But investors do not only ask whether electricity exists. They ask whether power quality is stable, whether outages are predictable, whether backup costs are manageable, whether utilities respond quickly, and whether infrastructure can support expansion. If Bangladesh wants to attract higher-value manufacturing, cold-chain logistics, semiconductor-adjacent services, cloud infrastructure, AI-related workloads, or regional data center investment, power reliability will be a deciding factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is especially important for data centers. A data center is not just a building filled with servers. It is a disciplined infrastructure ecosystem built around power, cooling, network connectivity, physical security, fire protection, monitoring, redundancy, and operational procedure. Bangladesh has a young workforce, strategic geography, and growing digital demand. But without reliable power and grid confidence, the country will struggle to compete for serious digital infrastructure investment. Bangladesh does not need to copy another country blindly. It needs a reliability-first model suited to its own power system, land constraints, climate risks, and workforce capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sixth, Bangladesh must treat workforce development as infrastructure. Power reliability is not achieved by equipment alone. It requires engineers, technicians, operators, planners, and regulators who understand maintenance, automation, electrical safety, control systems, cybersecurity, and emergency response. Technical education should be more closely connected to real utility and industrial needs. Polytechnic institutes, engineering universities, utilities, and private operators should collaborate on practical training in SCADA, PLCs, substations, protection systems, predictive maintenance, and reliability engineering. A reliable grid requires a reliable workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Bangladesh should create a national reliability roadmap for critical infrastructure. This roadmap should identify priority feeders serving hospitals, water plants, export zones, telecom hubs, airports, ports, and digital infrastructure. It should set measurable targets for outage reduction, restoration time, system loss reduction, preventive maintenance compliance, and equipment health monitoring. It should also clarify which investments deliver the highest public value. Not every area can be upgraded at once, but critical services should not depend on luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country\u2019s power debate must now move beyond the pride of generation capacity. Megawatts are necessary, but they are not sufficient. The future will belong to countries that can deliver reliable electricity to the exact places where economic value, public safety, and digital growth depend on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangladesh has already proved that it can expand access. The next national test is whether it can build trust in the quality and continuity of that access. A modern economy is not powered by electricity alone. It is powered by confidence that the electricity will be there when the nation needs it most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
