{"id":34375,"date":"2026-05-19T17:24:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T17:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thebangladeshtoday.com\/?p=34375"},"modified":"2026-05-19T17:24:01","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T17:24:01","slug":"womens-growing-role-in-banking-strengthens-financial-inclusion-in-bangladesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thebangladeshtoday.com\/?p=34375","title":{"rendered":"Women\u2019s growing role in banking strengthens financial inclusion in Bangladesh"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Staff Correspondent:<\/strong> Women\u2019s increasing participation in Bangladesh\u2019s banking sector is helping deepen financial inclusion, improve customer services and foster a more inclusive economic environment, according to banking professionals and industry observers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past decade, the presence of women in both state-owned and private banks has risen significantly, with more female professionals now serving in managerial and executive roles across the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from Bangladesh Bank indicate a steady rise in the number of women entering banking as officers, branch managers, and senior executives, reflecting a gradual shift in workplace dynamics within the country\u2019s financial institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sector insiders say women bankers are contributing not only to operational efficiency but also to customer engagement, particularly among female clients who often feel more comfortable discussing financial matters with women professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts believe increased gender diversity has strengthened institutional decision-making and expanded banking outreach to underserved groups, especially in rural and semi-urban communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite notable progress, challenges remain. Limited representation in top leadership positions, work-life balance concerns and lingering social expectations continue to affect women\u2019s advancement in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, many banks are gradually adopting more gender-sensitive workplace policies, including flexible working arrangements, maternity support, safer office environments and leadership training programmes aimed at preparing women for senior responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Mahmuda Begum, Senior Vice-President and Branch Manager of the Shyamoli branch of South East Bank PLC, the transformation has been visible firsthand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning her banking career in 1995 as a probationary officer, she recalled a time when relatively few women considered banking a profession because of long office hours and prevailing social norms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I joined banking in 1995, very few women saw it as a career option because of extended working hours. Now, it has become a dream profession for many female students,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahmuda credited institutional support and encouragement from her family, particularly her father, a former Bangladesh Bank official, for helping her continue balancing career and personal responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also highlighted her efforts to promote financial literacy among women entrepreneurs by helping them access loans and better manage business finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to her, women bankers are increasingly working alongside male colleagues on equal terms and receiving similar institutional support and opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her branch has witnessed a rise in women-led bank accounts and small business financing, underlining the wider role female bankers are playing in community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industry observers noted that women professionals are making important contributions in areas such as SME financing, microfinance and digital banking, helping expand financial access for women customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their growing participation is also seen as supporting broader national goals related to women\u2019s empowerment and inclusive economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among aspiring future professionals, the banking sector is also attracting growing interest.
